How can we help?

A typing trainer that lives in the MacBook notch. Hover the notch and it expands into one line of words for you to type. It draws those words around the things you are currently weakest at, and it keeps adjusting as you practise.

A Mac running macOS 14 or later. A notch is not required. On a display without one, TypeNotch draws its own notch strip at the top centre of the screen, and everything behaves the same way.

In the notch. TypeNotch runs as a background accessory, so there is no Dock icon and no main window to find. If nothing seems to be there, move your pointer over the notch area at the top of the screen.

Hover the notch to start. A line of words begins flowing right to left through a caret that stays put, and whatever you type goes into it. Hover off to stop. The word you were partway through is abandoned rather than scored.

Click the notch instead of hovering it and the panel opens onto your stats. The gear in that panel opens settings, where the word tiers and the punctuation and numbers modes live.

Ten signals watch your typing: pace and errors, each read over key pairs, key trios, word lengths, exact words, and finger zones. The blend of those ten calibrates itself, so the lens that currently knows the most about you has the most say in the next line.

9,865 English words, ranked by frequency and cut into seven tiers, from the top 100 up to the top 10,000. The default is the top 1,000. You can pick a different tier in settings.

Yes. Both are modes you switch on in settings, and they mix into the lines you are served.

A recency window holds a word out of the draw for a while after it has been served. Without it a session would collapse onto your ten worst words and stay there.

It appears in red and stays until you backspace it away. Space commits a word only when the word is clean, so a word with an uncorrected error never counts as typed.

Pair timings are normalised for travel, so a long stretch across the keyboard is not read as the same kind of slowness as a fumbled roll under one hand. The profile is measuring you, not the distance.

Four faces. A performance graph over time, a drill card for what to work on next, a glance view for the short version, and an influence map that draws the couplings the engine has learned as a force graph.

No. There is no networking code in the app at all, and the Mac App Store build carries the sandbox as its only entitlement, so macOS would refuse it a connection even if such code existed.

No. Keys are read only while the notch panel has keyboard focus, never through a global event tap, and no keystroke log is written anywhere. What is saved is a summary: your running pace and accuracy figures, plus a bounded tail of 500 word samples that carry no timestamps.

In the app’s own sandbox container, as a single file: ~/Library/Containers/com.capataina.typenotch/Data/Library/Application Support/TypeNotch/profile.json. Your settings are stored separately, in macOS user defaults.

Two clicks in the stats wing delete the profile, and the engine begins learning from scratch. Your profile is not wiped by quitting the app, so this control is the only thing that clears it.
